Artificial Intelligence and Home Automation Abstract Artificial Intelligence, AI, is slowly making its way into society; the next big step would be to integrate AI systems into homes. AI would be a huge help to people of all age groups allowing for security and help in completing the everyday tasks that keep the house in order. A master system that controls climate, security, appliances, and domestic robots was implemented to help make families lives easier. We concluded that AI systems are ready to take the next step to home automation and would greatly benefit from mass production of these systems. AI is supposed to learn to act at or above Human performance levels (7). This definition in itself scares people knowing that the purpose of these machines is to be as smart as and eventually smarter than Humans. AI systems could help people live their lives by completing mundane tasks and help automate tasks. Imagine a house that can wake people up, start coffee, start the dishwasher, drier and wash machines, and clean the house by just hitting a few keys on a keypad. Many people would choose this option over a house that cannot. By making peoples’ lives easier, it allows them to spend less time doing mundane chores, and more time spending time with loved ones. An example of a similar system would be the system developed by the University of Grenada to help senior citizens remember to take their medication of take their keys when leaving the house (9). Figure 1 AI has come a long way and Home and Office Automation is the next big integration step. Robots such as Honda’s ASIMO, Toyota’s Partner Robot, and Mitsubishi’s Wakamaru are all examples of domestic robots that can help around homes or offices. Figure 1 shows Honda’s ASIMO robot bringing its owner coffee.
